The purpose of Fair Trade is to make it possible for disadvantaged people in the South to escape poverty by creating “fair” rules that will allow them to have access to the global market. Fair Trade is currently experiencing a boom. At the same time, it is facing numerous challenges. How will it manage its striking growth and open new markets? Does it offer adequate responses to pressing ecological issues? Will it be able to make an effective contribution to sustainable development? Geert van Dok and Carole Schaber pursue these topics. They challenge Fair Trade actors to break new ground together by following uncharted and sometimes uncertain paths to achieve more “fairness” in worldwide trading. And they call upon the political and economic communities to make a convincing commitment to Fair Trade, in order to ensure that it will continue to benefit disadvantaged people in the South in future.
Fairtrade sugar from Paraguay needs less energy than conventional sugar from Europe. This is the result of a study made by "myclimate". The selling price of Fairtrade sugar contains a Fairtrade premium which enables the farmers in the south to realise various projects in order to improve their living and working conditions. The setting-up of telephones, internet-access and e-mail will facilitate the entrance to the world market further more.
